Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Misinformation during elections poses a serious threat to the democratic process, as it can sway voters, disrupt peaceful elections, and undermine public trust in the electoral system. In Nigeria, the rise of digital media platforms such as social media, blogs, and news websites has significantly amplified the spread of misinformation. In Kano Municipal, one of the largest urban areas in Kano State, the use of digital media during election periods has increased, both for the dissemination of electoral information and, unfortunately, for spreading false narratives. According to Olatunji et al. (2024), misinformation during elections often comes in the form of misleading news, doctored images, and false claims about candidates or the voting process. However, digital media also offers an effective tool for countering misinformation through fact-checking, public awareness campaigns, and real-time updates. This study seeks to explore the role of digital media in mitigating the spread of misinformation during elections in Kano Municipal. Understanding how these platforms can be harnessed to counter falsehoods and ensure the integrity of the election process is crucial for strengthening democracy.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The spread of misinformation during elections in Kano Municipal has the potential to affect voter decisions, create chaos, and undermine public trust in the electoral process. While digital media platforms have the ability to both propagate and prevent misinformation, the effectiveness of these platforms in mitigating election-related falsehoods in Kano remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate the strategies and challenges of using digital media to reduce misinformation during elections in the region.
